Usernames that are readable
Started By
I believe this moreso negatively effects the mods and admins than the userbase, but I understand that this can negatively effect you guys as well.
My idea is to have a rule that states that usernames must be able to be read and typed out on your standard English keyboard.
The reason for this being that it's near impossible to find a user who has their name in magical Character Map symbols or in another language like Russian. You just can't find them unless you speak that language, know their ID, or know exactly what symbols they used.
Example:
"Cat" would be okay
"Kat" would be okay
"кошка" would not be okay
"Čąŧ" would not be okay
BUT
if the person put the English, readable version somewhere in their name, that would be okay too, for example: "кошка (Kat)"
I have had to resort to searching the forums for any replies from other users to the unreadable usernames and it proves to be fruitless u__u

I support. You have no idea how many times I've had to actively search for users due to special characters, because unlike some people, I can't memorize everyone's user ID number. Maybe you can, Evlon, but I certainly can't.

Due to the fact that a user may change their name upon a whim, as many times as they so like relying upon searching via username is unreliable in any sense.
Of course, but if we remember even part of their (English) name, we can sometimes find them in the forums.

Personally any times I have been unable to simply copy/paste the name I refer to the user as their user ID.
This is fine and dandy but I do not remember every ID of every person I've talked to on Ala. I can remember a select few easy ones like 93 Ehm, 63 Blix, 6 Carni, 8584 my side, etc.

As well, if a user would like to have entirely unreadable names, I feel that is their choice in how they would like to display their selves to Ala.
I disagree, Alacrity is an English website and people should have to have their names readable to avoid people breaking rules. :(
And in my mod work, I've found that knowing their past usernames can aid a lot in certain situations.

Due to the fact that a user may change their name upon a whim, as many times as they so like relying upon searching via username is unreliable in any sense. For example, they may be cat right now, dog two seconds later and then at midnight the next week zombieunicorns. Really it's just personal preference of the user and how they would like to be addressed in game.

Personally any times I have been unable to simply copy/paste the name I refer to the user as their user ID. However in 99% of all my mod work I simply use the username (#ID) format, so that there is as little confusion who the player is. This way they may not simply change their display name and attempt to cause any confusion, as like I pointed out the ID is permanently attached to their account.

As well, if a user would like to have entirely unreadable names, I feel that is their choice in how they would like to display their selves to Ala. Though, many of the unique character names are rather fun for many of Ala's players and I see no harm in it, readable or not. If it's just unreadable, I'd refer to them as their ID until such a time they had a readable one. I do not find it such a task I guess since all mod work relies upon the ID rather than the name anyways.
