New phone?
Started By
So lately mum has hinted a new phone for me, and she said a while back when I decide its new phone time we'll go out and pick a nice phone- ps- I did have a starter phone for 2 years, and my brother had his for 2 years and updated to a smart phone, I really want a nice smart phone like the iPhone 4 (can't have newest) it's too much to buy and add line) any ideas for a smart phone? Please include a reason why I'd be happy with it
I want a phone I can have Internet access
One that will help with school functions (calculator ECT.)
And one that's not $400 dollars to buy and add a line

I use a Nexus 7 and I like it a lot. With the 7 inch, you can just buy Kindle covers to use with it instead of having to buy special sleeves or anything. The Nexus 7 with a 16GB hard drive, and wifi capable, is $229. For $40 more you can double your memory to 32GB, for a total of $269. This is for a brand new, straight from Google Nexus 7, with free shipping. Link.
Now, you'll still have to pay tax, but it's a heck of a lot better than $400-$600+ for a phone, then paying $80-$120 a month for data and other services.

If you opt out of a data plan, make sure you get one that does wifi. That way you can connect to the internet anywhere that has an open wifi access, which is not too hard these days. That'll definitely save you a lot of money there, so that way it's a one time purchase. And there are tons of free apps for android tablets like the nexus, plus you can choose a smaller size (similar to a small novel) or larger size (regular book size-ish).

Most phones, even flip phones, have a calculator.

For a phone with internet, it's going to cost a lot. Any smart phone is going to cost you a pretty penny. You'll need a data plan and you'll need to make sure you don't go over the limit, or it'll cost even more. Think $80-$120 each month.

Also you'll want to make sure that your school allows phones, especially smart phones. When I was in school, they banned phones period. That same school has a ban on smartphones now, because kids are just using them to text, look up answers/cheat, or disrupt the class.

If you absolutely feel like you need a smart phone, go with the cheapest thing they have. That means stay away from the i-anything's - all you're paying for is the name. Android devices are alright, I have one myself that I enjoy playing games on and looking at the internet on, but in general for web surfing you might as well just get a tablet/ebook/chromebook/laptop. It works just as well, if not faster for the typing, and you don't *have* to get a data plan for them (though with tablets you can opt to do so).

To be honest, I don't reccomend getting a smart phone unless necessary, simply because a lot of phones with internet access also come with monthly fees, data packaes, etc. (I know that my plan, we have to pay $30 a month per phone for the data packages, so multiply by 4 people and we're paying $120 a month on TOP of our bills) Most simply phones do have calculators. Even my sister's flip phone had.

I got a Envy phone when I was like, 15, and then a samsung (which is free with a upgrade), and then I went and got a blackberry because as a business major, it was necessary to have some sort of smart phone.

Honestly, if its not necessary, I say don't do it and just wait. This is just my opinion because I feel like having a smart phone isn't a necessity unless well, it's necessary xD I still see kids in my college with flip phones.)
