Tlkn 'Ike di$ ( is "text talk" okay? )
Started By
As our society grows, and new generations learn and use media more and more often for more tasks, "text talk", in which people take short cuts for words is being used more and more often. Proper grammar is becoming used less often for texting, emailing, social networking, ect. As a fellow teenager who finds herself tiring of having to ask about what words people growingly make up to communicate via technology, I am interested to know how fellow users feel about the growing absence of proper grammar/English within our technology.

English is a pretty random language anyway, but the only text talk I can tolerate is smiley faces, lol, and abbreviations that sound exactly the same, like r instead of are and u instead of you.

I hate text talk but I'm ok with "lol"/"LOL", "b.rb"/"B.RB", and "g2g"/G2G". I also correct others when they spell things incorrectly, but I also don't understand why they get an attitude when they do. I mean, I'm just helping so that you don't get in-trouble.

I'm okay with lol, but I -hate- text talk. I am a grammar freak, and I correct people when they spell stuff wrong.
So, I don't like text talk.

I think it's something that can be problematic for the reason we don't allow it on Alacrity.
That is, online it has the potential to increase the language barrier between English speakers and ESL folk.

From a linguistics standpoint, however, it's really quite interesting, being a further evolution of the English language (which is constantly evolving, and always has been, as virtually all modern languages do and have done).
This of course, in itself can cause problems --- such as people handing in papers and doing reports using "text talk" within it, because it's English as they know it.. which rather differs from English as they were taught it in school and expected to know it.

Personally, I don't really know. Having to read it bothers me. It gives me a headache trying to translate it, the way some people have difficulty reading classic literature of a certain age.
That being said, I think it's interesting. The liberties that can be and are taken with language are intriguing artistically, and I find the simplification --- which is in part reverting to a direct representation of the verbal --- very interesting.

I think text talk is detrimental to the english language, how are people who are learning english as a second language supposed to understand grammer rules if we don't use them anymore, it's really sad that schools seem to be allowing some text talk as they allow students to spell words how they sound but not teaching spelling in lower grades anymore(yes they used to begin teaching spelling in kindergarten as kids were also learning to read)

Yes, text talk does get slightly annoying. But, what bothers me more is when people correct text other people's text talk. I believe as long as there are no cusses or PG13 and up comments that people should be able to speak their minds freely in any form they prefer. I find it rude when people snarl at them for writing "gotta go!" instead of "gotta go!". I honestly think some of the grammar rules are a bit uptight here, because people will have to totally change their image just to be able to fit in and not be called out.

Anyways, my point is that I don't think people should be discriminated against for shortening words. I mean, it's not the end of the world, people :/

My phone has the keyboard on it which helps. The touch pad phones were a pain and I would occassionally shorten words when using those. If I've got a keyboard, I'm good to go and don't feel I have even the slightest excuse to shorten my words.

I do like to look back at old facebook messages to friends where I used text talk like a beast. I cringe at it but its so funny that I talked like that.

Oh by the way, this entire post was written from my phone. It may not have perfect grammar or spelling but I rarely worry about that in forums, regardless of where I'm posting from. It just shows that you can at least try while on a phone.

Well, I know I will never be using text talk (I did at one point when I was 12 or so, believe me I laugh when I see the stuff I did then!)

Text talk is a major "problem" as far as I'm concerned. People have even submitted English papers to teachers using it! Who does that? Apparently some people, heh.

I do use lol and similar things; faces xD 8D :D ;) as well, but, those things are all easily understood and I don't even use "lol" for "laugh out loud" all the time, I just say it... if that makes any sense. I tend to use LOL if I'm actually laughing, lol if I'm not, but I want to make sure someone knows I am reading what they are saying.

But, at the end of the day, no, text talk is not good at all. I am an English major, perhaps that plays into that view. I do not use any form of text talk, even lol, when I am writing formal things. I do not think it is right to use in that regard. Replacing lett3rz is just plain...why. Cutting words short, same. I love this quote in regard to that: "If you say please because it's shorter than please, I'll say no because it's shorter than yes" It's a bit of an old quote, but all the same it has a good point!

Hate it. I don't even have I phone or text, but when I look at some of the texts on my sister's phone I can't even tell what they're saying. Text talk, terrible spelling/grammar. My mind goes blank.

People should stop being lazy. C'mon, what would your poor old grandmother think of this. Obviously, Grandma probably wouldn't understand what "Wuld, you lke 2 tlk wth me sumtim?" means.

This is truly pathetic, people need to stop being lazy and type out their words. Wouldn't it be pitiful to see bad spelling/grammar on a job application down the road? Yeah..

To be honest, Text Talk annoys me. Text talk was originally about because people were on phone plans that charged per character, on touch-pad phones. You know, where each number represents a few letters and you had to press however many times to get to that letter? Yeah. So it was supposed to be a cheaper way of getting your point across. After they did away with charging by character, I immediately started typing like a normal person.. however it is evident that most people did not, and this makes me a very sad panda. And I'm not even a panda. :(

Text talk is the reason a lot of people don't remember what 'vowels' are.

I hate text talk. It drives me crazy. Then again, I'm a huge grammar/English nerd :P

When it comes to texting, the only abbreviation I use is "lol", and I only use it rarely.

I think it's more work to "tlk lke di$" and that all that work should be put into "talking like this".

I hate text talk. I can't read it most of the time. I'm okay with "lol" but that's about it.
