Same-sex Marriage/Adoption/Lifestyle (expanded)
Started By
Should same-sex couples and families have the right to be joined in marriage with its benefits, or be contained within civil unions? Are the rights in civil unions adequate enough for dedicated partnerships or families to support on or not?
Should civil unions be allowed at all?
I want to bring up this debate as I am doing serious research paper required for the end of the year about ‘Social Justice’ and would like to see all sides of the spectrum.
Please, give posts with meaning than just putting ‘Yes! All the way!’ or ‘No! It’s wrong!’. Thank you.

Why is this "debate" even allowed on a pet site? Really stupid, good-bye, website, not going to play you if this is considered acceptable here.

GOD Made Adam and EVE NOT Adam and Steve, no this should not be allowed, I don't understand gays at all, to me it is wrong.

did you literally just use that argument

I am so sorry that your brain has been poisoned with religion

So basically, loving somebody of the same sex is wrong because YOUR "God" created two people of the opposite sex? You are aware there is more than one religion, right? Not everyone believes in your god.

And what does it affect you if two men get married? Oh wait, it doesn't. You're wasting time and energy fighting against something that doesn't even affect you. Why bother. Why can't you just let two people love each other in peace.

I'm of the opinion that the only people it affects are the people involved in that relationship.

Marriage in America is basically paperwork for legal rights.
Holy Matrimony is what we call the ceremony you perform in a church before whatever God you worship.

If Gay Marriage is affecting your marriage, you or your partner is gay.
If Gay Marriage starts to affect you, maybe you shouldn't get Gay Married.

Just sayin'.

Y'all religious folks can keep your Holy Matrimony. I don't believe in God, so I don't need some man in a robe to bless me and my partner of choice - whether that person has the same genitalia as me or not.

@blue moon kennels
Gay marriage and being gay in general is just the same as being straight and married, except with someone of your own gender. What is love? Love isn't about the ability to conceive a child, love is about caring and supporting one another.

And honestly, I think this world needs more love than anything else, and allowing and accepting gay marriage would bring just this.

Yes I am a Christian, and yes I know the bible says somethings that could be considered anti-gay. God did make Adam and Eve, but God also made Jesus, and Jesus's most important message to all of his followers was to love our neighbors, no matter who they are, or where they came from.
Ect. It really shouldn't decide their happiness and well being just because they choose to like people of the same gender.

haha no

You don't choose who you like, last I checked. I can't look at someone and say "Hey, I'm gonna fall in love with her." And no, you do absolutely do not choose your sexuality. While sexuality IS fluid and can change over time, you have no control over it. I mean, sure, you can say "Hey, I'm gonna go try dating girls." But you won't actually have any emotional/physical connection with them unless you're attracted to them. Which isn't your choice.

LGBT+ youth are constantly bullied and even KILLED for being different. And you think they choose that lifestyle?

No, they shouldn't. Just another reason to force churches into things they don't want to do. God meant for man and women to be joined in marriage not men and men or women and women. I have no problem with bisexuality, but I fell its wrong that they get the benefit of marriage when god wanted to unite men and women

I'm surprised you just changed like that, Plot. Sure it's been over a year since that post, but what made you change your views, if I may ask ?
Also, to people: We DO NOT choose our sexuality. I never chose to be bisexual with a preference of females. That's not how it works.

I could care less what sexual orientation you are, it doesn't really matter to me. Sexual orientation should NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE in whether or not you can be happy, open and have basic rights or equal rights to those of a straight or a person in general with the opposite orientation.
I don't get the big deal.... Why does or should the sexual orientation of a person or of people decide how they are treated, what rights they should have, Ect. It really shouldn't decide their happiness and well being just because they choose to like people of the same gender.
Everyone deserves a chance to love and find happiness. If same sex marriage makes you happy, GREAT. I support you. (:

Alright, this is a debate I can talk for hours about. No one should have the right to vote on another person's right to get married, because if heterosexual couples would like to get married, it should automatically be a right for same-sex couples to get married, to adopt, and have the same basic rights as other heterosexual couples because they are all human. We say not to let history repeat itself, but look at what we are doing: we're killing others for their sexualities, preventing them from having the same benefits as any human being should be automatically allowed to have, just as we had for others of color earlier in the 20th century. In Russia, people are constantly murdered in broad daylight for their sexuality, something they can't help. History is repeating itself. We should just suck it up and allow people to marry what ever and whomever they want to, regardless of species, gender, or age or color. It doesn't matter. Who decided it mattered? Homosexuality has been around for as long as we have been around, and it's been present in every species in the animal kingdom. It shouldn.t be shunned. Just let people get married! The government is supposed to be separated from religion, anyway.

Honestly? I do not see the big deal of same-sex marriages. The only difference is the fact that instead of a male and a female wanting to spend the rest of their lives together, it is a male and male or a female and female couple. Maybe it is just me being naive, but what does same-sex couples wanting to be married have anything to do with the government? What right do they have to say "You cannot marry!"? All they are doing making people unhappy and scared to be around the person they love.

I am straight, and was raised VERY religious by my mother and step-father. I was told to never have anything to do with the LGBT community, as they have a bad lifestyle. My step-dad especially, was very against same-sex marriages. But frankly I do not see the big deal. A lot of my friends are Bi or Gay, and they are the nicest people I know. They do not push on me what they do, even though I know that some do, and they are actually much more fun to be around. They are not afraid of themselves.

I do not understand what the issue is. As I said before, I may be naive, but what right do people have to say no? This is just my opinion.

Honestly, I dont think it matters. If you want to marry the same sex, marry your dog, marry a lamp, go ahead. and do what ever you want with them !

I'm bi, and the people I've told dont give two craps. I'm sure when I get older people will bitch to me about it, but i dont freaking care. I just want to live my life my way. I do support gay marriage, even though it would be stupid for me personally not to. I used to be a rather mindless Christian, it was something my mom dragged me into when i still didnt really know what it was. I haven't really read the WHOLE bible, and though I don't believe in it, i still enjoyed what I've read so far. No one has the right to judge anyone but themselves.(unless of of course, you're the judge in a court x3)

Ah, Clay. ;3

I don't think I had someone like that. I never had a problem with it at all..even before I realized I was lesbian. :p
Really the biggest thing I remember was an article on AOL about done men not being allowed to marry. It really crushed my heart, and I had wondered why anyone had a problem with it.
I read a series of books that had a lesbian couple, and the book had said that the couple received letters of complaints (this is fake, of course). Just..again.

!!!! I didn't know Nelly was flying the rainbow flag ;D

I'm gay myself and have always been comfortable with my orientation and with same-sex marriage/relationships. I think a big part of it has to do with the way my mom taught me as a kid. She told me when I was young that she had gay friends and they were great friends, great people, etc. She supported gay marriage. Keep in mind that my mom passed away when I was 11, so it was very young that I was taught that being gay was okay - an age range where kids are learning all sorts of stuff that can be crucial later on down the road.
I feel bad for the people who are homophobic or self-hating due to their homosexuality, I wish we all had someone when we were younger to shine a different light on sexual orientations and perhaps show us that there's nothing wrong with being gay or gay relationships.

Alright, time I post here.

I'm lesbian (omg) and I do not see the problem with gay marriage.
I'm not religious. I just celebrate the holiday and will defend myself (I'm Jewish) if needed.
No, I don't believe in god.

Honestly, what is the issue ? I hate people who say gay marriage is wrong, etc. well, I can say "Being straight is wrong!" And what difference would it make ?
People would probably yell at me for that statement but I'm just making a point. What if being straight was wrong ? How would people think then ?
People can like different races. People can like people regardless of age (well, both need to be over 18 or whatever age it was).

To long; didn't read:

Being gay myself, I see no issue with gay marriage/adoption/lifestyle.

I am not going to say much about this topic, but as a Christian, I do have one thing to say.
In the bible, it says no human should judge another being because we have done just as bad things. Whether the "God says being gay is wrong" is valid or invalid, is it anyone's place to forbid it? By stripping people of their rights, aren't we judging? The only being who has any right to judge us all is God. Therefore, I feel it is wrong for me to stand in the way of what makes other people happy.
I personally am straight and have no problem with gay, bissexual, or lesbian people. I do not support nor be against gay marriage. Let people do what they want to do.

I have never and will never understand the "God said" argument.
"God says" a lot of things, but people simply pick-and-choose what they want to believe in. If your reasoning for supporting inequality is "God says", I'd like to know if you follow every thing else he says, including the more extreme ideals about not wearing certain fabrics.

I really don't understand what the issue is with "God says". Surely, a man and a man or a woman and a woman affects you just as much as a random man and a random woman getting married, right?
Men and women get married all the time, but nobody cares at all.... so.. why is it just when same-sex couples get married that it suddenly affects everybody?

"I have no problem with bisexuality, but I fell its wrong that they get the benefit of marriage when god wanted to unite men and women"

You clearly do have a problem with it if you want to deny them a set of rights that many straight couples take for granted.

I would have to disagree.

Churches are not the ones who give marriage licenses to couples. The state is in charge of recognizing marriages. However, churches can have the right to deny the marriage ceremony within their grounds for individuals, such as same-sex couples. If anything, churches have it easy by being tax exempt. They’re in no way being forced to bend backwards for their privileges. ‘force churches into things they don't want to do’, if you will please enlighten me, what else are churches being forced to do?

Also, marriage has been long before the idea of one, sole God (assuming you’re speaking in the defense of Christianity). It has been witnesses and recorded in many ancient civilizations—the joining of two in a ceremony of marriage.

Denying people rights due to your religion, or anyone’s religion, is going against the basic human rights every person is given in this world. Religion should never be an excuse as to what people can do.

In example: I love orange sherbet. However, if you love vanilla or chocolate, or whatever flavor suits your fancy, I will punish you and strip every right I can out of you in a political agenda.

Another Example: If my religion looked down upon those who ate donuts, I would not make it illegal. I would simply follow my own religion, respect others, and not try to force it upon people. I

Sounds a bit harsh, right?

Overall, the debate on whether marriage should be given to same-sex couples is rather shallow if you only use religion as the reason why two people shouldn’t be legally recognized and have the benefits of marriage.
It doesn't really matter. If yes or no. You love what you like. Go for it.
It doesn't matter if your a girl that wants to marry a girl. But sometimes. People say that why your marrying a same-sex person. Your heart chooses it decides if same-sex or Opposite-sex. Just trust your heart.

~Waggy
