Also, you made a typo with my username on the characters post O_o)<br /> <br /> Merla sighed and began working on crocheting again in her small kitchen corner. A shiny, plump tear welled up in her eyeball and slowly grew until it was shoved over Merla's eyelid and swiftly down her cheek. In half a second the tear plummeted off her cheek and dove full force onto the linoleum kitchen floor. There, it burst into dozens of microscopic water droplets invisible to the naked eye.<br /> Merla punched her fist in the ground furiously. She couldn't let herself cry. Crying was against her integrity. After blinking a few times to revive herself she gently picked up her crochet work and got back to completing it.<br /> In mere minutes her work was completed. She held it up to the air and sighed with relief. Gently, she stuck it into her backpack and gathered her things. Merla slowly got up and thrust the backpack over her shoulders. She walked briskly out the door, determined to find the mutts that left her.

Benji laughed. "I can smell it on you, silly! Your whole body practically has 'Merla' written all over it!" he pushed Merla's hair away from her eyes. "Come with us. It's pretty fun to bother Madds! She doesn't really bite." he added. Maddi flicked her ears at the name 'Madds'. It bothered her a whole lot. "Don't call me that! And I will to bite! Just not you..." she snarled viciously, saying the last part quietly. Benji blushed slightly when Maddi said that. He looked at Merla and held out his hand to help her up. He hoped she'd take it, since she would have to help with something if Maddi was to let her stay, though she would never really kick her out. Maddi twitched her ear again, hoping to pick up anymore conversation between the two. She started to pad towards the wall, her nails clicking against the concrete. Benji looked out the tiny window, the only window, and watched as Maddi walked by. "Come on! She's leaving! Are you coming or not?" he put his hands on his hips and shifted his body weight to only leg. His eyes were still soft though, and his voice too. Maddi stopped under one of the many benches in their miniature apartment complex. It was really just a colde-sack with five tall buildings that had around six tiny apartments in each. There was two on each floor, and there was three floors. In front of each building, there was a bench that fit three people if they were squished together. Cars were parked all around and it was pitch black, for none of the apartments had power but only some had running water. Many of the apartment complex's were like this in district two, with district three being the richest. Maddi sighed. The air was dank here and in smelled like exhaust and garbage that had been sitting in the sun for days. Benji had noticed this too. He had come from the middle district. District one. He remembered his life there and tried to push the thought away. He stared at Merla for a few seconds, then turned into the brown dog that he was. "Catch up to us later. In your dog form." he said, walking outside and catching up to Maddi.

Merla did not answer his question. Instead, she gently set her masterpiece down beside her and glanced at Benji.<br /> "How do you know my name?" she whispered and turned her face back down, for it was turning bright red in embarrassment.<br /> <br /> Merla hated her name. It was the stupidest thing she ever heard! She always wondered to herself why she wasn't named Jessica, Layla, or even Laurie! "Merla" was just some stupid wizard name to her eyes. A name that didn't come with good nicknames.<br /> <br /> Merla let her thin brown hair fall in front of her eyes, and didn't make a move to part her hair again. She wished she could sink through the floor boards in a flash.

Benji wondered what was taking so long. He walked up to the door and looked at Merla, wagging his stub-for-tail and saying, "Come on Madds, call her by her name at least! Merla, come with us! It's pretty fun when I'M around." he the last part softly and father-like, though he had never been one. Maddi glared at him. "Don't call me Madds! That's not my name!" she insisted, and backed out of the doorway. Benji smirked and raised an eyebrow, waiting for Merla's response. He looked closer and noticed she was making something. "Whatcha making?" he asked her, hoping to hear her voice for once. He wondered why Maddi was so rough with her, calling her kid and having such a hard tone. He looked at Merla, his face soft, waiting for an answer.

Merla never looked up nor spoke. She thought about doing so, but flashbacks of the occasional times she talked to her normally drunk parents entered her mind.<br /> ~<br /> "Mother, we have no cereal!' Merla exclaimed to her mother.<br /> "Shut up or you'll be eating weeds!" her tired Mother snarled.<br /> "But-"<br /> "Do yeh think your whining is going to help you? I'm just glad I only had one kid, you scrawny rat!"<br /> <br /> Merla's father had died a few weeks before to due over drugging himself, and her mother was destined for jail next week. Until then, not a word escaped Merla. <br /> ~<br /> The only reason Merla didn't turn into a dog was to avoid the jail and government. Her parents were arrested enough times for Merla to know she didn't want to be arrested with them. She was captured anyways though, and here she is.<br /> <br /> She was now halfway done with what she was crocheting. It wasn't obvious to Maddi, but Merla was making a sweater. An oddly shaped sweater, that is. The torso was long and the sleeves were positioned right on the sides of the chest. The sleeves were much too skinny to fit human arms, anyways.

Maddi ran inside, Benji had not followed and she was grateful for that. She went into the kitchen and sat next to Merla. Maddi sighed miserably, "You know, your going to have to talk some time. We know your a dog, just show your true form." he blue eyes glinted in the setting sun. She glanced towards the door, where Benji had walked in. He was in his dog form nad he looked at Merla with his hazelish eyes. Though he didn't speak, Maddi could tell he was heartbroken. She looked back to Merla. "Whatever, do what you want." she said softly. Then, she went in the empty living room and looked around. It could fit at least fifteen in their dog forms, all curled up, but only about eight in human. Benji's stomach growled. He was hungry, but not starving, and he wanted to look for food with Maddi. <br /> <br /> Benji walked to Maddi in his human form. "Are we going or what?" he asked, hands on his hips. Maddi stood up and nodded. She started out the door but stopped and looked at Merla. "You coming, kid? We could use an extra paw." Benji walked to the bench that he had been asleep on all day and then waited for Maddi. He didn't really know Merla, and Maddi had found her so therefore, she was Maddi's responsibility. He huffed and went dog, as Maddi did quickly after she had asked the question. The first stars were shining in the navy-blue sky and no human were out anymore.

Merla had been busy crocheting in a corner in the kitchen. She had just moved in with Benji and Maddi yesterday, but the only thing she ever said to them was "Hi" and "Oh, my name is.... never mind." Since then she has been comfortable in the kitchen corner with nothing but a few sandwiches and her crocheting kit. <br /> She refused to ever turn into her canine form, in hopes that the government would think they captured the wrong girl and release her. Merla never admitted her power to anyone, not even her drunk parents who probably didn't even care she was gone. It wasn't her parents she wanted to get back to, it was something else she wanted. A secret.

It was around midnight and he and Maddi had been walking for hours in their dog forms around the perimeter, looking for ways to escape. "Madds, can we go home now? Please?!" he complained only because he wanted her to talk. <br /> "Nope," Maddi replied, "and I told you not to call me Madds!" she added in a low growl.<br /> "Sorry."<br /> "Whatever."<br /> Both of their paws ached but they wanted to escape so badly, and there was only on way in, with no way out. Maddi turned away from the huge wall and walked towards a garbage can. Benji watched as she found a half-eaten loaf of bread, some stew, and a sausage link of three. She turned into her human form to carry it back to their tiny apartment. Benji lingered, staring at her butt. Maddi stopped and turned around. "Benji, stop!" she barked in a whisper. Benji blushed and walked with her.<br /> <br /> At their apartment, Maddi dumped their loot out onto the floor. The both went dogs and ate their fill. After, still in their dog form, Maddi curled up in the living room and fell asleep. Benji stayed awake and cleaned up the crumbs in his dog form. Then, he laid next to Maddi and fell asleep.<br /> <br /> Benji awoke to ind that Maddi had gone to work. He sat up and found that Maddi had covered him with the blanket that they had found. He looked around their tiny, unfurnished living room. That was the only room in the house. There was a kitchen and a bathroom but few used them. He got up, folded the blanket and went outside. It was barely 6:00 in the morning. He stretched and sat on the bench in front of their apartment. He didn't have a job and Maddi's was low-paying, but he didn't need one. They would escape in a few months. He swatted at a fly that decided to commit suicide by his face. He watched for any other dogs that he could see.<br /> <br /> After work, Maddi found that Benji had been asleep all day on the bench. She slapped him on the top of his head. "Wake up you lazy bum! It's 4:30! PM!"<br /> she said loudly. Benji jumped up. "Oh hi Maddi! I was just.. just..." he got nervous all of a sudden.<br /> " know what you were doing you oof!" Maddi said, more gently this time. She sat next to him on the bench and put her head on his shoulder and sighed, looking around for any dogs that were like them. When she realized her head was on his shoulder, she got up quickly and ran inside. "Wait! Maddi,what is it?!" Benji gasped.
