With a yawn and eyes still closed, Sonic slowly rose for the morning, only to smack his head on something directly above him. A huff of disgust later, he remembered where he was… and why. The scratching and weird noises were back in his doghouse. When howling brought no response from his owner last night, he crept in the doggy door and hid under the couch, where he must've fallen asleep. After crawling out from under the couch, Sonic stretched and shook himself to redistribute his beautiful corgi fluff.

He trotted over to the french doors looking out across the backyard. There it was, his beloved doghouse.. now the bane of his existence. It was nestled happily amongst a sea of tulips that Sonic would slow to smell as he made his way into his sanctuary. Its beautiful blue siding, white trim and latticework mocked him. The temperature control inside, with it's comfortable dog bed and multitude of pillows, water and treat dispenser didn't comfort him anymore. Now, it just lulled him into a bogus sense of security before the awful noises returned again.

Turning slowly away, head down, Sonic made his way toward the kitchen for his breakfast. As he flopped down in front of his bowl to nom his kibble, the room started shaking and a horrible noise descended from upstairs! Despite his dour mood, Sonic's nub started to thump and he cocked one ear to listen better. What came down the stairs was not what he expected.
They still smelled like his kids, but Sonic knew they didn't normally look like that. He backed up against the fridge, ears flat and teeth bared as they flew down the stairs and converged around him… first a vampire with bloody fangs, next a purple unicorn with a flowing rainbow mane and finally what looked like a wad of aluminum foil. The vampire and unicorn giggled before rolling Sonic over for a tummy rub.

"Silly dog!" declared the unicorn.
“Sonic, it's us," said the vampire. "It's Halloween today! All the kids dress up and go Trick or Treating. I told you all about this. See? I'm a vampire. Olivia is a unicorn and Graeme is a leftover. Dad tried to talk him out of it. It was all he'd dress up as."

Sonic huffed as Graeme made his way over and started pulling on his tail. He knew they were still his kids. He had just forgotten that today was Halloween! With another yawn, he laid down happily and let Graeme smother him in attention.

“Poor Sonic!", declared Olivia. "Are you still sneaking in during the middle of the night? Maybe there's something wrong with his doghouse."
"We already told Dad, Livvy. He'll take care of it", said Nolan, as he scratched Sonic behind the ear.

Sonic looked at them quizzically as they left. He had no idea they were so perceptive. Here he thought he was being sneaky when he crept inside at night. Sonic finished his kibble and exited through his doggy door into the backyard. He plopped down right next to the deck steps and had a staring contest with his doghouse. (Which is rather silly, come to think of it. Doghouses don't have eyes.) Head cocked to the right (a position that seems to help him think), the pup decided that since it was daytime, whatever was inside his doghouse couldn't hurt him. He figured he'd seen enough scary movies with the kids to know that bad things only happen at night. This was breakfast time, after all!

With trepidation, the pup slowly made his way closer to his beloved house. Nose up, he sniffed the air cautiously. The curious corgi smelled the ever present tulips, a slight stench of garbage from the cans by the fence and an underlying, barely present smell he couldn't place. Intriguing, he thought mildly. It didn't smell scary, which Sonic thought was reason enough to continue. Hackles raised slightly, Sonic stuck his head slowly into his doghouse and whined. The place was a mess! Sonic preferred to have things organized.. He was a corgi with a bit of OCD. The pillows were strewn about.. One even ripped open, stuffing spewing out of it and across the floor to the window. Bits of leaves and mud were scattered across the floor. His favorite squeaky toy looked like it had been mauled and was covered with an unidentifiable goo. And the worst part? His delectable treats were strewn across the floor!

Sonic made his way inside and slowly began to pick up his treats, dropping them gently back into their bowl. He stopped and sniffed his squeak toy before pawing it out the open door with the rest of the debris. His ears twitched as he caught that unfamiliar scent once again. His corgi brow furrowed. He didn't know what was going on, but this was the last straw! Scaring him out of his doghouse was one thing.. But to disrespect his delicious treats like that? That just won't do. Grumbling to himself, Sonic flopped down after rearranging his pillows just so. With a big yawn, his eyes slowly began to close.

When Sonic reopened his eyes and looked out his window, he barked in surprise. It was dark out! He had dozed off after he cleaned up the mess. It took a few moments longer before Sonic realized what had woken him up. There was a scratching noise above his head. Not again, he thought! Steeling himself to be brave and not run or whine, he cocked his head to the right and perked his ears for a better listen. He got to his feet, despite how severe his body was shaking, so that his ears were mere inches from the ceiling. Not only was there scratching, but thumps and a weird chattering noise that he didn't like at all. Not a single bit! He shook his head a few times and slowly backed up a few paces. Unfortunately, he backed up in the wrong direction and now there was a solid wall behind his fuzzy rump.

He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply in an effort to calm himself and not overreact. Just then, Sonic felt something wet land on his muzzle. It had that same smell as his favorite squeaky toy when he found it hours earlier. Bad.. bad.. no good.. run.. bad.. save treats.. bad.. ran on a continuous loop in his mind. He knew deep in his soul that this wasn't going to end well for him, but he couldn't seem to force his paws to move. A couple more drops leaked down from the ceiling, pattering down upon his head. A few flecks of sawdust filtered down from between the boards above his head. One huge bang was what it took to finally get Sonic’s paws back into action. As he imagined his doghouse falling down on top of him, he began howling in terror. His claws tried to find purchase on the slippery tile floor. Both front legs slid out from underneath him and he landed nose first against the floor. With a bit tongue and an ear-splitting yowl that issued forth from his small, corgi stature, Sonic scrambled to get his legs back underneath him and ran wildly throughout the small space. After a few laps around the room, he finally located the exit and ran as fast as his little legs would take him.

Did he stop to smell the tulip? Nope. Did he meander through his doggy door? No way! He stopped to get a treat and pat from his owner, right? Not a chance, bucko! Sonic didn’t stop until he dove headfirst under the chair farthest from the French doors. No, he didn’t realize that his corgi bum was sticking out from under the chair, or that he was still trembling with fear. All he knew was that he was in the big house, far away from whatever tried to eat him (so he thought) in his doghouse and that there was this awful whining sound that was giving him a headache.

Sonic didn’t hear the footsteps approaching behind him. Suddenly, he was being grabbed around his middle and something was trying to pull him out from underneath the chair! With a yelp, he squirmed and struggled and tried with all his might to claw his way farther under, but nothing worked. He squeezed his eyes shut tight and waited for the impending pain he just assumed would happen when things eat you alive.

But wait.. Nothing was biting him. How odd, but in a good way. His nose twitched. He knew that smell! He knew the arms that were holding him tight. As he realized he was the one whining and decided to knock off that racket, he also heard someone talking to him.

“Sonic? Sonic! What’s wrong, boy? Are you ok?! You crazy pup, calm down. Nothing’s going to hurt you.”

He relaxed a bit when he recognized the voice. It was just his owner, Rex. He snuggled a bit deeper into Rex’s arms and buried his head under his armpit.

“What’s got you so worked up, dog?” Rex asked, tickling behind Sonic’s ear with a finger. Cradling the corgi, Rex slowly made his way over to the windows overlooking the back yard. Every step made Sonic tense up a bit more. Rex nuzzled his beloved pooch and kissed the top of his head.

“Well, you’re covered in pillow fluff, sawdust and.. Ugh, what is that? Did you drool on yourself? And on top of your own head. You truly are a talented animal, aren’t ya?” Rex chuckled. “With my awesome powers of deduction, not to mention that I saw you dart in from your doggy door and the kids cornered me earlier, I’ll guess whatever has you freaked is in the back yard. Probably around your doghouse.”

“Now it’s alright, buddy. Just stay with me. I won’t let anything eat ya, ok?” smirked Rex as he set Sonic down next to him.

Rex opened the door and stepped quietly into the backyard. Sonic, hackles raised and on high alert, followed a bit more slowly. When the pair took a few steps towards the doghouse, the scratching became audible. The duo stopped.. But for two completely different reasons. Sonic, purely because he’s a coward and Rex, out of interest and confusion. They both tilted their heads to the right (wonder who picked that up from who) and listened. The scratches continued and were accompanied by a chittering noise. Sonic took a tentative step backwards, a low growl issuing forth. Rex on the other hand, was laughing. The corgi threw him an ‘are you crazy’ glare and huffed. Seeing his dog’s reaction only made Rex laugh harder.. until he snorted.

“Sonic, you big dufus! It’s nothing to be afraid of, trust me.” admonished Rex as he began removing the roof of the doghouse.

The bewildered corgi raised one eyebrow as he wondered what had gotten into his owner. Maybe this thing can control minds! He shook his head once and looked over towards his doghouse. Ears perked, he swore he heard Rex talking to his house in the same tone he talked to him earlier. Now, why on earth would he be talking to a bunch of wood and pillows?, wondered Sonic.

Slowly, Sonic crept forward until he was directly next to Rex. Corgis are short animals, however, and he was still unable to see what his owner was up to. With the roof off his doghouse, he could smell the peculiar scent he noticed earlier. Curiosity finally took over his common sense and he braced his front paws against the top of his doghouse and looked over the top. What he saw wasn’t a monster or a ghost. It surely didn’t look like it was going to eat him.

Looking back at Sonic were two big brown eyes engulfed in mounds of fluff. It was grayish brown with a dark mask and rings around it’s tail. How funny looking! He pushed his nose down a bit farther and sniffed. Yep, the same smell. So this small thing was causing all the commotion? Sonic gave the furball his best corgi smile and chuffed at it. The.. Whatever it was, batted at his nose.

“Nutty dog. This is what’s been scaring you the past week. It’s nothing more than a baby raccoon!” stated Rex, grinning. “The poor thing is too tiny to fend for itself. Let me make a few calls and see what we can do for him.”

Sonic eyed the raccoon (what a funny word!) and tried to get closer. With his head so close to the baby, it easily grabbed a hold of Sonic’s ears and climbed onto his head. Lowering himself carefully back down to the ground, Sonic curled up in the grass and laid his head across his paws. The tiny visitor climbed off his head and curled up next to his chest and fell asleep purring. Sonic wondered at what a crazy Halloween it’s been. He hoped all of them weren’t like this! He snuggled himself tighter around the raccoon and soon found himself ending his holiday with some well deserved rest and a new friend.

The End!

2214 words of scariness and squee-ness!

Roo started decorating early in the morning on October 31st (the best time of the year), hanging the spider webs inside and a string of cute little pumpkin lights outside. She danced to Monster Mash as she darted around the house in her pajamas, cleaning and hanging decorations before most other humans were even awake. She even had a tray of pumpkin spice muffins in the oven. Those smelled delicious, so I planted myself in the middle of the kitchen and waited for them to be done. Maybe I could sneak one while she wasn't looking.

"Dolffyn!" Roo called. I stood and stretched. The muffins smelled like they were almost done and I didn't want to abandon my post, but when my owner called, I just had to go see what she needed me for. I plodded down the hall and found her in the guest bedroom. She sat in the middle of the bed, pieces of fabric spread around her. "Come on up, sweetie." Roo patted the bed next to her; I hopped up and snuggled in next to her leg. She stroked my head and scratched behind my ears. I groaned happily and twitched my back paw to urge her to continue.

"You like that, huh? What do you think about a new costume this year?" She picked up a different headband than the one I normally wore - this one had antlers instead of devil horns. It didn't look nearly as frightening and I couldn't imagine the little humans looking wide-eyed at me. I hid my face under my paws. "Is that a no? What about this one?" She held up an angel's halo this time, but it still wasn't what I wanted. I caught sight of a pair of bat wings strapped to a harness. I pawed at that one. "Ah, bat wings this year, eh? I thought you'd go for the devil horns again, but the bat wings will be cute!" She rubbed my side. "Okay, go back and watch the oven. But don't think you'll be able to sneak a muffin when they're done - I know what you're planning." I gave her a kiss on the cheek, then hopped off the bed and trotted back to the kitchen. Now they were really close to being done. I dragged my special orange and black Halloween bed across the tile floor and waited, and waited, and dozed.

I must've slept longer than I wanted to. When I woke up, the muffins were cool and in a basket on top of the fridge. She really does know all my tricks, I thought. I'll never be able to get them now. I looked at the clock like I've seen Roo do a thousand times, but the little lines pointing to the shapes didn't mean anything to me. I glanced out the window; the light was dimming, shading the sky in various soft colors. The sun was about to set. I hopped up and stretched, sliding my front paws forward and bowing deep while waggling my rear end around in the air to stretch my hind leg muscles even more. There's just nothing quite like a long, deep stretch. I checked the front of the house, but Roo wasn't there. The giant bowl of candy sat on top of her piano and the smaller bowl of tasty, meaty dog treats sat next to it. I sniffed the air; homemade biscuits with beef broth. My mouth watered and I stared longingly at them for a minute, contemplating my chances of sneaking just one without making a mess. I decided not to risk it and set off to search the rest of the house for Roo.

I finally found her in her bathroom, applying the finishing touches to her face. Her costume looked different this year. She had on pants and a shirt instead of a flowy dress. It looked darker, too. I hopped on the bed and waited for her to turn around. She rubbed her face, put her makeup away, and said "Ready, Dolffie?" I whined in anticipation and she spun around.

Her face didn't look anything like her. The space around her eyes was dark and her cheeks looked hollow. I whined and growled. A trickle of blood ran from the corner of her mouth. No, wait... I sniffed the air. It wasn't blood, it was red corn syrup. She laughed and I saw that she had sharp pointy teeth like mine. "It's okay, sweetie. It's still me. I'm just dressed up funny." She told me she was pretending to be a "vampire", but I didn't know what that meant. I hopped cautiously from the bed and snuck up to sniff her. She still smelled like Roo, but she looked so different.

The sun had set by the time we went back to the entryway. She strapped the bat wings to my back and gave me one of her homemade meaty treats. We waited and waited, and finally the kids started coming. I heard them walk up the driveway before she did, so I thumped my tail against her legs to warn her. She stood up and unlocked her front door. As soon as the kids hit the steps, she threw the door open and said "Welcome, little children!" Roo's voice sounded different, like those people from a place called "Transylvania" that they talk about in some of the movies she watches. The small humans all burst into nervous giggles and thrust their candy containers forward. A little witch held a pumpkin-bucket, a cowboy held a bag, and a Jasmine, Belle, and Cinderella all held pillowcases.

Roo lifted the bowl off the piano and held it over their heads. "Do you want to be surprised? Or do you want to pick out your own pieces of candy?" The small humans all spoke up at once, talking over each other and reaching for the bowl. I wagged and Roo laughed. "Okay! Everybody can take five pieces each; I need to save some for the rest of the trick-or-treaters!" The kids pushed against each other, anxious to get their hands into the big bowl of candy. Once everyone had their five pieces of candy (Jasmine and the witch took six pieces each, but I didn't tell Roo), they ran across our yard and up to the next door.

We stood next to the door the rest of the night, startling all the adorable little humans that rushed up to our house. There were astronauts and Transformers, vampires and werewolves, angels, devils, witches, Disney and Pixar characters, a few hobos, a couple nerds, and one little boy who had a golden symbol on his head and told us that he was a "Jaffa" (Roo gave this one extra candy). Some trick-or-treaters dressed up their dogs and brought them along. The Pittie from down the road had been dressed in a flowy red cape, and his Greyhound housemate wore a shiny, fake leather saddle (I could tell it was fake because it didn't smell anything like cow). The next-door Dachshund wore a collar with two bolts sticking out of it, and had a raggedy piece of fabric tied over his back. He said he was a "Frankenweenie".

The costumes kept coming all night; some announced themselves by ringing the doorbell, but some asked their canine companions to "speak". We opened the door for everybody, talking a bit, complimenting their scary, pretty, funny, or frightful costumes, and handing out candy and dog treats (we were almost out of these and I tried to sneak a few for myself, but Roo caught me).

Roo glanced at her watch, then looked down at me. "Well, Dolffie, it's getting late. There shouldn't be any more trick-or-treaters now. What do you say we lock up and watch The Atomic Brain?" She watched this movie every year, howling with laughter during every scene. I didn't understand why it was so funny, but she enjoyed it so I sat with her, wagging and howling along occasionally.

I barked in response and she closed and locked the door. We snuggled into the sofa. Roo wrapped herself up in a blanket and poked her arms out so that she could eat popcorn and leftover candy.

Half an hour into the movie (the good part where the girls start to realize that something is amiss), something scratched at our front door. Roo jumped, scattering popcorn around the room. I launched off the sofa and growled at the door. I heard Roo moving behind me, shifting the blanket off and standing slowly. The scratching sound came again, this time followed by a soft bark. We both relaxed slightly.

Roo grabbed the key and peeped out the window. She didn't scream or anything, so whatever she saw must not have been too scary. She opened the door and I scooted over next to her legs to see what was out there.

A raggedy looking German Shepherd peered back in at us. He whined, licked his lips, and tentatively wagged his tail. I felt Roo relax entirely as she reached for the storm door and opened it.

"Hey there guy," she said. She crouched down and held the door open, waiting for the strange dog to approach. He took one slow step towards us, then another. I sniffed the air; he smelled okay, a little malnourished maybe, but otherwise friendly and healthy. I wagged to welcome him.

He came closer and closer and until he finally nuzzled into Roo's lap. I sniffed his butt; yep, he was definitely an okay guy. I glanced at Roo and she smiled back at me.

"Think we should keep him, Dolffie?" I barked and wagged - my version of a "Yes!" She closed the door, locked it, and led the way down the hall. The new guy and I followed her into the bathroom, where she loaded him into the tub and turned the water on. "First thing's first - you stink." After he had a thorough scrub-down, Roo gave him a bowl of food (he wolfed it down) and the extra collar she had lying around. "What should we call you?" She thought for a minute, then glanced at her DVD collection. Whenever she needed to name something, she looked there. Her eyes landed on Stargate: SG1. "Ba'al?" The new guy looked up. "Perfect! Ba'al it is. Now, let's finish the movie."

We snuggled back into the couch again (after Ba'al and I had cleaned up the popcorn, of course) and resumed the movie. Roo laughed, I howled, and Ba'al looked a little confused at the whole situation. I could tell he was happy, though; he wagged when Roo and I laughed, and occasionally joined in with a tentative whine.

Yep, Halloween is definitely the best time of year. Lots of kids to give me pets, lots of treats, and, this year, a brand new housemate.

1,819 words of Halloween Happenings, complete with two of my Ala dogs, two movies, and a TV show ^.^

Of Hearts and Hurt

The frost-tipped grass trembled against the cool October breeze and the argent moon smiled fully upon the World from its resting place upon the horizon, but this was no amiable or joyous smile; it was a smile of mischief, deceit, and an impending trick whose consequences would prove deadly. Having no wish to deal with hoards of pups and children begging for treats, Wisteria left her kennel and set out to a large meadow and her favorite spot under the boughs of an old oak tree, whose limbs were already bare from the oncoming winter, and then she lay her down in its shade. She was an ashen grey both naturally and from the many years she had existed, black and dark brown were splattered across her back as though painted by a child, her chest was light silver, and by most standards, she had looks that could rival the moon’s splendor. As her eyes grew heavy and her mind numb, she drifted off into a gentle slumber and the hours slipped by and the moon rose to its full potential and it wove a web of beauty and fear and trickery in its devious mind. At the height of its glory, the moon set its plan into motion.

A single silver dove soared away from the moon’s hoary brilliance and into the dimly lit meadow in which Wisteria had fallen victim to the whispering voice of sleep. The bird fluttered onto an outreaching limb of the old oak tree and belted out a strange coo that filled the air and resembled a scream almost more than the sound of a bird. At this Wisteria awoke with a start as she leapt to her feet. Looking around, she noticed how quickly time had slipped away from her. In a slight hurry, she stretched her legs in preparation to rush home, but a flutter in the old oak tree caught her attention. She turned to see the dove, fluttering restlessly from branch to branch with growing eagerness. Now intrigued, Wisteria watched as the dove became insane and moved from branch to branch with a new ferocity as though its life depended on it. Then from somewhere far above a single arrow sailed across the navy sky before planting itself firmly in the pigeon’s ashen breast. A pool of deep red formed around the arrow’s tip, but the dove did not expire. It remained rooted to its final resting spot in the tree while drops of deep scarlet fell from its chest and stained the ground beneath it.

In this way, a few moments passed. Then a strange thing occurred: the dove turned transparent, as one might expect a ghost to, and the arrow fell to the ground only inches from Wisteria’s paws. In complete shock, Wisteria looked from the arrow to the dove, then back again, trying to make sense of what she saw. As if this were not strange enough, in the puddle of liquid life that had fallen to the soil, a single vine rose out of the ground. Steadily, it grew until it was no longer a small vine but a miniature bush entwined around the arrow and forming from the crimson fluid. Wisteria took a step back, examining the shrub as pink buds grew along its green leaves and sculpted themselves into perfect hearts, and then beads began to fall from them but froze in time, resembling the drops of life from the pigeon’s breast. She knew the flower well, the flower of the bleeding heart. She looked up once more at the dove, it breast stained with the crimson of life and of death, and it returned her glance then seemed to laugh. A loud roaring laugh, reminiscent of that of a witch, rang through Wisteria’s mind and echoed across the meadow with tremendous volume.

She should have run. Looking back, she should have known of the things to come and run with every ounce of her strength and stamina. But she didn’t.
Too quickly events unfolded, she did not have time to think or prepare, but only to watch as her life slipped from her hands. From somewhere across the meadow, a great huffing began. And it grew closer and louder as new sounds emerged; the sound of hoof beats sounded with a steady cadence that was nothing short of intoxicating, and a strange sound almost like the hiss of a snake accompanied it with random intervals. All the blaring noise grew louder and louder until Wisteria dove to the ground and tried desperately to block out the sounds.

That retched laugh. The quickening pace of hoofed feet interrupted by the hiss of machinery. The great huffing of a creature worked far past its capacity. Wisteria shook her head, covered her face as best she could, hit her ears upon the bark of the old oak tree until smears of red tainted her fur, but still the sounds filled every fiber of her being and resonated within the walls of her mind.

Then everything stopped.

Her ears were stunned by a mute world where not even the wind dared whisper. The dove was still bloodstained, but had turned its attention to the glowing orb of the moon. Whatever had been coming towards her had stopped, or perhaps never been there. For a moment, Wisteria convinced herself that it had all been her imagination or some terrible dream, but after closing her eyes for a few moments to clear her mind, she was not greeted by the usual moon surrounded by a blanket of stars. Overhead, the sky was black, not the black of night or of a raven, but the deep black of nothingness. The full moon, once welcomed for its abundance of light, was deep crimson and… was that a face? True enough, it now displayed a face twisted into an evil grimace. The world was dark vermillion from the moon’s unusual rays as it… she… still smirked at Wisteria. Wisteria attempted to release a yelp or a cry, but was paralyzed by shock, confusion, and unadulterated fear.

Now the sounds came back, louder than before. Wisteria threw herself onto the ground, trying to keep her wits about her, but she soon fell victim to the cadence once again. She could feel her sanity slipping away as information that she had once understood was now distant. Things were lost into the deep abyss of lunacy: her owner, her friends, and her own name even, everything was stripped away. It’s a strange sensation, to watch your thoughts slip away. She tried to grasp bits and pieces of information, only to find that she had no clue what she was searching for, but she knew whatever it was had been there only seconds before. It reminded her of a hot Saturday when she was just a pup. Her owners and all their little ones were outside blowing bubbles. Wisteria, only a small pup at the time, tried desperately to catch one, but every time she came close, the thing would POP and disappear. As her wisdom disappeared, she eased her panicked heart with comical popping sounds, until that memory was removed and she only had a fleeting remainder of rainbows and exaggerated pops.

Soon her mind was little more than an empty shell void of the thoughts that had once resided within it. Now she lay in a heap upon the ground, rubbing her head against the rocky earth, no more than a shadow of her previous grandeur. She attempted to stand, but could only prop herself up, her legs bent in awkward angles. Her fur, once silken, was covered with dirt and stained with blood and sweat. Her eyes were vacant and maniacal, her mouth spread into a grimace of pain and lunacy. Still, the nightmare was not over for her.

Finally, the cause of the noise appeared. It was a horse, beautifully gold with dark braids as a mane, but made entirely of metals and cogs. Plates of copper or gold, embellished with swirls and flowers, covered its length save for a few places where the silver mechanisms showed through. Along its side were a long bow and a shining sword, both ready for use. Its gait was smooth and effortless, but its huffing and hissing showed the hard work that the mechanical beast was doing.

Upon its back there appeared to be no rider, but clouds of steam formed a figure, sometimes an entire profile other times little more than a blob. Slowly, as the steed continued its thundering charge, the mist shaped itself into the solid form of a human. And in a single swift motion, it grabbed the loaded bow from the horse’s side and raised it. With a quick snap, an arrow as silver as the moon had once been flew through the crimson darkness and slid smoothly between Wisteria’s ribs and into her panicked heart. The sounds grew distant and her sight paled, though she could tell the moon returned to its normal hue, as she slipped further away from reality and towards the darkness into which her mentality had disappeared.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wisteria awoke. She found herself upon the place where she thought death had taken her over, but she was still alive and well as far as she knew. Fear propelled her forward, and she took off towards her home at a sprint. As she grew closer, her legs fell limp once more and her breathing shallow, but she kept up her pace. In her joy, an enthusiastic howl peeled from her chest and rang through the city streets. She saw her house, her kennel, her family and little ones. As Wisteria came into view, the female took the human pups inside, but Wisteria only believed they had gone off to get something absolutely delectable.
The male of her family was outside by himself now. He watched her cautiously as she ran towards him with a limp, foam sat about her mouth, her fur stained with deep crimson, her eyes shifty and revealing her madness. In a single swift motion, he raised the loaded shotgun from his side and with a booming crack; a polished silver bullet flew through the darkness and slid smoothly between Wisteria’s ribs and into her panicked heart. Wisteria fell, a pool of red streaming from her breast, as a bleeding heart dove landed in a nearby tree, with a stem of flowers in its beak, and it let out a strange cackle uncannily similar to the high pitch screech of a woman’s scream. The icy moon smiled with delight and continued on its usual course, searching for another victim and another form of entertainment.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I believe this is roughly 1780 words :D
Kaya walked around looking for which house to go to for her first choice of the night she was in her pink butterfly costume and all of the kids and there parents said she looked amazing. But she wanted to looked spooky not cute and fluffy but she cant change now because trick or treating had already started. She caught up with her friends, Skruff,Moon and Bone. Bone looked the scariest in his monster outfit. "Hurry guys lets go and get some treats!" Barked Moon running along the grass holding his bucket. Kaya and her friends bounded after him. The first house they went to was a very spooky house, Kaya walked up to the door and gave a little howl. A man in a were wolf costume came to the door. "Why hello there young pups." He said. They all looked up at him with there big puppy eyes, He gave a big laugh and handed them each a treat. "This Halloween is gonna be the best!" Howled Bone and they all started walking down the road. The nect house they went to was not as scary but it looked like there would be something good there. This time Bone made the howling noise. An old man with a long beard answered the door. Bone looked at him and worked his magic, First her rolled over then begged then played starving. Kaya gave a giggle and waited for the man to give them the treats. He closed the door and returned and few seconds later with 5 treats for each of us. They all barked good bye and they were on there way again. They caught up with two more friends, Wolf the Collie and Wagster the Corgi. They had some cool costumes on too. All the puppy friends were walking down the street wagging there little puppy tails and letting there little puppy tongues hang out.....
THE END....HAPPY HALLOWEEN
Spooks' Halloween
Starring: Spooks
Spooks was just 5 months old when his first Halloween came up. When he and his owner went out on that night, he yanked at the leash from the overwhelming smells, and noises. Oh, was there so much to be curious about! The little Jack Russel puppy was dressed in a ridiculous bat costume. His owner would veer him around, and he would obey any commands his owner threw at him when other people and their dogs walked by. 'Probably just showing off..' Spooks thought. His owner smiled as Spooks yipped and yapped over a piece of candy that fell and just kept walking. Spooks lolled his tongue out, and they arrived at a scary looking house. His owner, being herself, knocked on the door. The door gave an ear piercing screech, causing Spooks and his owner to wince. A handsome face peeked out. Spooks could hear them talking. The bits of the conversation were meaningless to Spooks as he sniffed the door. His owner smirked lightly. "Come in, come." the handsome face smiled. Spooks wandered into the house, and winced as he heard a scream. He looked back to see his owner crumpled onto the floor. The evil look on the man's face as he chased Spooks around was horrifying. Spooks darted back and forth. He, too, felt a sharp pain in his side, and he collapsed onto the ground, whimpering. By the time he woke up, he was laying inside a cage. A woman wearing white unlocked his cage, and carried him over to where his owner was sitting on a chair. "Spooks!" she cried. "Hello, Spooks!" the man next to her smiled. Spooks owner took him home, and the man was never to be seen again.
"Howloween? Whasat?"
Ollie yipped, deep brown eyes wode and tail thumping cautiously.
"OBVIOUSLY it's a night when you howl. Like a wolf! And they come tp scare little puppies like you!!"
Fall teased, hackles raised and eyes narrowed; twinkling mischieviously. "Boo!" He giggled at his wide eyed, trembling brother, trying to puff out his fur and wrinkle his muzzle, tiny puppy teeth bared teasingly.
"Fall!"
Autumn's stern, amber gaze fell upon them, glancing from Fall, whose fur was still bristling, ears flattened at his mother's scolding, to Ollie, who was crouched behind his sister, Summer, who was snuggled up against him comfortingly, tiny puppy tail wiggling.
"You know better than to scare your brother!"
Autumn scolded, eyes narrowed. Fall ducked, ears flattened and gaze locked on his paws. "Sorry mum."
Autumn cleared her throat, and Fall sighed. "Sorry Ollie." He scampered over to his brother, glancing from his paws to his mother's disappointed gaze, and swiped his brother's cheek with his tongue, mumbling aquick apology. Ollie playfully gave his littermate a shove with his paw, then ducked behind Summer as Fall glared at him.
"Howloween isn't scary," Autumn continued, "It's loads of fun! You can dress up and pretend to be a wolf, if you like," she paused, glancing at Fall, whose eyes lit up, "And every little puppy is rewarded with plenty of goodies-hot dogs, tennis balls, a clean new tug rope, cookies! But the very best part-" " Better than hotdogs?" Olli interuppted, incredulous, his head cocked. Summer narrowed her eyes and nudged him, with a quiet "Shush!!", and Ollie gasped and slapped his paws ocver his muzzle.
"But th best part is Afterhowloween Dawn where all dogs, big and small-yes, Fall, even Great Danes- gather outside and watch the sun rise and when it hides beneath the horizon, everypup joins together to howl the darkness away. "
Ollie, tail thumping exuberantly, panted with enthusiasm, eyes shining with excitement. Fall gave a bored yawn, stretching, before mumblin quietly, "I still think the cookies sound bettrer," and Summer glared at him, before yipping. "I can't wait!! I'm gonna be a disc dog."
"Well, I gonna be a big, scary wolf!" Fall challenged, giving his fiercest growl and dropping into a play bow, puffing out his hackles. Summer eyed him, before growling playfully. "I'll show you who's big and scary!"
"Well I'm gonna be the biggest, bravest, fastest agagility dog ever!" Ollie howl-yipped, wriggling on top of his sister. "I can't wait!"
Autumn gazed fondly at them and stretched, her gaze warm as she watched her l little puppies wrestle and scamper around her, yipping happily as they played.
"Can we go yet? Can we? Please?" Ollie yipped, eyes shining and tail thrumming. "Not quite yet," Autumn replied, laughing as she gave her littlest puppy a lick on his head, fluffing up his fur. Ollie ducked, giggling, then yelped as Summer tugged on his ear, wearing a shiny new red bandanna for Howloween, then dropped into a playbow,tail wiggling.
"Mo-om!" Ollie heard Fall whine. Autumn had grasped his scruff firmly in her jaws, and he was wiggling, frustrated and pawing, desperately trying to get free,fluffing out his scruffyfur once he had all four paws on solid ground.
"Uhm...so what are you again?"
Ollie asked his brother innocently, head tilted.
Fall looked to Ollie like he had licked his fur backwards, jumped in a mud puddle and rolled around until his fur was spiked every which way.
Fall glared at him.
"A wolf, DUH!"
He snarled, hackles prickling. Ollie gave a little whine and ducked behind Summer., who shot Fall a glare.
"Shhh..."
Autumn soothed, nudging Fall forward and swiping each puppy with her tongue. "You want to go Tricks for Treating, right?"
"Yes!"
The little pups chorused, eyes shining. Even Fall was eagerly swishing his tail, and Ollie peeking out from behind Summer. "Remember. Be polite, do your best, stay together and have fun. I'll be behind you, don't worry," she added as Ollie gave a slight whimper at the thought of going out alone with Fall and Summer.
"Be polite, do our best and stay together," Summer repeated, her ears perked attentively. "Right." Autumn praised, and nudged her little ones encouragingly forward towards the doggie door. "This is gonna be so fun!!" Ollie yipped, scrambling after his sister. Fall was right behind him, and he growled impatiently, shoving Ollie. "Wow," Ollie breathed, gazing up at the cobalt sky.
Ollie shivered as a light breeze ruffled his fur, engulfed by the cold niht ait. It was dusk, and the sky far above was splashed with starlight; the m moon bathing the earth in a milky white glow. Ollie blinked, his eyes adjusting to the the musky dim light, his tail thumping. The street was lined with pumpkins that were decorated by every little puppy accented with small candles that flickered and danced in the breeze. Already Ollie cpuld hear the excited yips of other little puppies and the f, amused laugher of their parents; already the street was flooded with the scent of fresh biscuits, cookies and the sound of new squeaky toys.
"Come on already!" Fall whined, prodding Ollie with a paw. Hr flattened his ears apologetically,, then scampered off, Summer in the lead and Fall right behind.
~*~
"What'd YOU get?" Fall yipped, his tail thrumming as he gazed down at all of his treats (which hsd gotten much smaller than it had been when he had started) Ollie, tail thumping happily, was nosing through his goodies, eyes shining. He had gotten two oatmeal cookies for rolling over and yipping, a piece of bacon for 'waving' and attemptin to beg (he had pnly stumbled a bit, but was rewarded for his efforts) three peanut butter, bone shape biscuits, one bully stick (partially chewed by tjat ppoint) and his very own new tug toy and tennis ball. He thumped his tail happikly, then perked his ears as he heard Summer rummaging through her treats. "More cheese...oh well," she muttered. Her pile was neatly sorted; her new frisvee and tennis ball together., biscuits arranged by flavor, and her assortment of cheese treats (which she wasn't a fan of; she preferred peanut butter) nosed off to one side. "Ollie, want hese?" Summer asked, pawing the cheese treats. "I know you love cheddar."
"Yes please!" Ollie yipped, tail thumping happily as Summer rolled some cheese treats over to him. "Here!" Ollie woofed, nosing his peanut butter treats over to her in exchange. Summer's eyes lit up, and she nuzzled him.
"Wanna play?" Fall suggested, tug rope in mouth. "You're on!" Summer yipped, droppin into a playbow.
Ollie giggled, about to join in, then perked his ears as he heard faint pawsteps behind him. "Momma!" he yipped, showing her his pile. Fall yipped eagerly, abandoning the game to show off his brand new bandanna; dotted with white pawprints. Autumn admired her pup's treats with ooh's and ahh's, praising Summer (who had collapsed in an exhausted heap, panting heavily from playing tug) for winning the best costume contest, and Ollie for winning best trick.
The pups' excited chatter faded as large German Shepherd, posed regally on a dmall brick wall cleared his thoat, and every dog quieted, gazing up at him, in a hushed solrnce.
"The time has come once again to howl away the darkness and welcome the morning sun." He paused, sweeping his fond gaze over the culdesac, from the littlest chihuahua pup to the largest wolfhound before continuing.
"Join me, brothers, sisters, to howl all the darkness and whatever sadness or unluckiness that may be there away, and welcome the warm morning sun, wishing happiness and luck to everydog, from the newborn pup to the oldest dog. Join me, now, to sing away the dark and welcome the light. Howl with me!"
Ollie, eyes wide at the shepherd's speech, gazed around at everydog gathered, as eachone in turn tipped back their heads and yipped, some high pitched yaps, others deep bays. Ollie gazed up at his mother, eho nudged him
encouragingly, as she herself, pointed her nose to the sky, letting our a light, melodious howl. He heard Fall yip next to him, and the little pupclosed his eyes and lifted his muzzle, joining the chorus and addin his own, high pitched yip to the song. Summer joined nezt, and soonthe whole cul de sac was echoing with excited howls, welcoming the sun.
"Look!" Summer gasped, nudging Ollie as she gazed at the horizon. Sure enough, the sun was peeking over the hillside, streaking the sky with shades of pink and orange. Ollie yipped excitedly along with the rest , welcoming the sun.
*~*
"So," Autumn whispered, nuzzling each pup as they curled up tightly next to eachother, fighting back yawns. "Howloween isn't scary, is it?" Fall had already dozed off, his head resting on Ollie's tail, tummy full of biscuits and hot dogs. Ollie and Summer shook their heads vigorously, and Ollie fought back a yawn, resting his head on his paws, his brother tightly cuddled next to him, tummy risin and falling. "No, mum," Ollie yipped, tryin not to yawn, "Howloween wasn't scary at all!" Summer nodded, pressing ulp next to her littermates., exhausted but happy. "Actually," Ollie murmured, yawnin, "It was the best night ever." Autumn gave him a kiss on the forehead as he blinked sleepiy. "Mum?" Ollie murmured, peeking up at his momma. "Yes, little one?" "I can't wait till next year." Autumn nuzzled him fondly, and curled up around n
her puppies. "Goodnight, Mum, " he yawned, curled up happily with his brother and sister. "'Night, Ollie," Autumn replied..
"And Happy Howloween."
I've been lying in my room for hours now. It's 5:30 am and there's not much I can do. You know what the worst part of my situation is? I'm in the same room with my parents. They keep looking at me, and I can't help but not look back and try not to cry or scream.
Their eyes are focused on me and their mouths are wide open. There's a strong scent of blood and I feel so paralyzed with fear. Here's the thing. The second I make any hint that I'm not asleep anymore, I'm screwed. I'll die, and there's nobody around to save me. I've been trying to think of a way out, but the only idea I have is to rush for the door, run outside, and scream for help, hoping any neighbors hear me. It's risky, but if I stay here, I'll surely die.
He's waiting for me to wake up and see his masterpiece. You're probably wondering what's going on. I do get ahead of myself sometimes. About three hours ago I heard screaming from the other side of the house. I got up and went to check the noise before I realized I had to use the restroom.
Instead of doing the smart, noble thing and investigating, I used the bathroom first. I could have gotten myself killed right then for my stupid actions. But I actually did my business and took a peek outside the bathroom. There was blood on the carpet. As any other sane human would do, I bolted back to my room, hiding under my sheets like the scaredy I was. I tried to convince myself to go back to sleep, and that this was just some weird, vivid dream or something. But I heard my bedroom door creak open, and like the terrified child I was, I peeked out from under my blankets to see what was going on.
I could see something dragging my parents into the room, obviously dead. It was not human, I can tell you that much. It was hairless, with no eyes and no clothing. It walked like a caveman, with its back slouched as it dragged my dead parents. But this thing was smarter than any caveman.
It propped my father against the edge of the bed, and made him face me. It then sat my mother down in the chair and positioned her towards me as well. Then, it started rubbing it's hands along the walls, staining it with blood, drawing a circle with the devils pentagram in it. This thing had made what it would probably call a masterpiece.
To finish it off, it scrambled a message onto the wall that I could not read in the darkness. It then positioned itself under my bed, waiting to strike.
The scariest thing now is, my eyes have adjusted to the darkness, and since then, I can read the message on the wall. I don't want to look at, because it's terrifying to think about, but I feel I need to see before I'm killed.
I peek at the creatures masterpiece.
'I know you're awake.'
"Why do I have to wear that one" Rufus said in a moan. Chocolate just laughed as Rufus was put into the fluffy pumkin suite. When Rufus was all zipped up he was placed back down as the final touches were placed on Chocolates costume. She was dressed as a whitch. When the children were finished getting into there costumes they clipped a lead on chocolate and opened the door. "Im not going!" Said Rufus, looking out at the darkened night, with people of all shapes and sizes dressed in costumes were walking with bags in there hands. Chocolate just nudged him out the door with a chuckle. Rufus got up on his feet and shook, he tried to jump back in side but it was to late, the door was already closed.
As the children walked down the street from house to house , Rufus was walking beside Chocolate. "Why are we wearing these?" He asked, looking down at his costume. "Oh young pup, you have so much to learn. You see, every year on this date everyone will get dressed up in costumes, some scarier than others, and go to door to door collecting candy" "Wow!" Said Rufus, wagging his tail as he bounded toward the children as they came to a house with lots decorations. He looked at a coffin that was in the garden and went over to sniff it. All of a sudden a vampire popped out from it. Rufus whimpered and ran over to Chocolate, who was laughing.
Every now and then, the owners of each house would give something to the 2 dogs and by the tie they had finished going round to every house on there block, the childrens bags were filled to the brim. Rufus bounded upto the door and waited for them to open it. he was wagging his tail as the door opened but fell backward with fright as he saw 2 unfamiliar faces at the door. He peeked up from the door and the faces were replace with those of his human parents. He wagged his tail as he jumped inside, Chocolate and the children laughing as he ran inside.
i made this story about Grayson my pit bull from the pound :)
I was a little about 9 months after my owner passed away from a heart attack. I was devastated! He raised me, my mom's owners didn't mean to breed her espically with another pit bull it was a mistake i was the only survivng pup so they tossed me in a gas stating parking lot and Papa,well his grand kids called him that, found me and he raised me to be nice and he bottle fed me then he started having heart problems and he had a heart attack and died. Papa's kids didn't want me so they dumped me at the pound. i sat there for a nice long month until Melody found me. It was almost halloween and they shelter was having a party trying to find dog s the perfect home and i have gone through so many and so many i have been reclined the minute the found out i was a pure pit bull! they said i was a bad kind of dog and they would look for another dog. Well Melody was there with her cousin who volunteered there! I loved Melody's cousin,Stacy, and Stacy loved me but her mother was allergic to dogs but Melody fell in love with me and Stacy adopt me for her! I finally found the perfect home! i went home that afternoon and Melody's mom loved me until she knew I was a pit bull! she said that I would have to prove myself within 1 month or i will be sent back and I tried so hard to be the best dog i could have been! They went out shopping for a halloween costume because Melody was going out by herself this halloween! and while she was out she got me a costume of Toto because she was a pretty dorthy! Next she grabbed my leash,snapped it on my collar,grabbed her candy bucket and we ran out the front door! We went from house to house to house! it was so much fun! at the last house on the third neighbor hood we went to she walked up and rang the door bell and they gave her cand and they said that there were dog treats inside and that they would show her where they were but i had to stay outside because they were allergic to dogs.
"then why do you have dog treats?" asked Melody
"for the dogs that might come by dear!" they replied sweetly! so she went in and they closed and locked the door and i heard screams! so i was trying to get in fast! Then i spotted a window i took a running jump and i was in! i sniffed her out! but she was guarded so i jumped using my fighting instinct at the gas station! i leaped and they had no idea what had happened! She had a horrible cut on her forehead that wouldn't stop bleeding so i knew i need to hurry and win! I did! they were out within 5 minutes! But my hip got put out of joint so it hurt! I didn't want to walk three neighbor hoods home! i tried to walk to Melody but i had to drag my leg. So i just untied her and she grabbed the phone and called 9-1-1! they were speedy fast! They picked me up so gently and put me and Melody in the police car and they drove us home. Melody's mom rushed out and when she saw Melody's forehead she thought it was me who hurt her but when the officer took me out told her that Melody was kidnapped and that i found a way in through the window,attacked them, and saved her! The officer also told her that Melody's arm was fractured (but i couldn't tell) and her head would need stitches and that my hip was broken,out of joint, and that there was some glass stuck in it from the window.Her mom greatly thanked the officer and gave him a snack for helping us and she took Melody in the car to the doctor and she put me in too and i thought that she would take me back to the pound! But instead she took me to the doggie ER and said that my hip was hurt badly and they took me back and fixed while i was in a nice long sleep! about 3 hours later after Melody's arm had a bright pink cast and her head had stitches i was picked up and i was taken home and i was welcomed to a nice brand new bed instead of my hard corner and a special crate! i loved those things espically the shaded ones! but she put Melody in bed and she walked over to me and she spoke to me for the first time since i had come into her house,
"Thank you for saving my daughter,she is the most important thing to me! welcome home Grayson!" and she hugged me!(her husband was injured severely and didn't live) I actually felt safe for the first time since before the pound! I received a metal for my bravery from the police station and i was welcome there from now on! I know i had the best home any dog could ever have!
Sorry if it's longer but if you give me a notebook,pen,and a story idea i could write a mini chapter book!
Halloween Dog Talk.
Halloween was slowly creeping up like a ghost on the world. The dogs in FOX customs and trial dogs kennel were discussing many things about Halloween - one of their favorite holidays! The current convesation ? Who looked the most like a scary Halloween creature!
"I think I look the scariest!" Cedar boasted. "I look the most like a werewolf!"
"You may, Cedar," Wyspie replied. "But when you think about it, I could look like a black cat stalking children in the streets."
"Pfft!" Cardnial, a corgi, interupted. "You may think I don't look like much, but I can look like a wolf!"
"A funny looking wolf indeed!" A borzoi custom, Brindle, chuckled. "Me and Winnie decided that we can look like ghosts with the Ghost Costume."
"What," Cedar jumped back in. "You think a Ghost Costume will make it up for your non-scary looking coats ?" He puffed his chest out. "The scarier, the better!"
"It's not like that!" Winnie interupted the sheltie. "Your pattern doesn't matter, nor does the costume. We can go as what we want. After all, the only thing that matters is having fun, right ?"
"I agree to that." Heads turned to Kicia, a very beautiful sheltie custom. "If you want to only care about patterns, Cedar and Wyspie, go ahead."
Wyspie huffed. "I never said I agreed, I only said I looked like a black cat stalking children in the streets!...when you think about it of course."
The dogs had gone on about the ideas floating around the conversation. Patterns, costumes, fun...which mattered most ? All the dogs wondered and stated their opinions.
"Maybe what matters most is what you think ?" Winnie suggested. "Some may like patterns or costumes...some may just be going out for the fun of it! Whatever you like, you like."
"I totally agree!" Brindle yelped.
"I guess you are right," Wyspie confessed. "Halloween is for dressing up and having fun! Not for boasting about coat designs or teasing about costumes. Cedar ?"
Cedar looked up at the group. He blinked and his ear twitch. He shuffled his paws then spoke, "Yeah...I guess you are right. But I still look like a werewolf!"
Winnie's eyes sined with pride. "Indeed you do, Cedar! I'm glad you and Wyspie both learned what Halloween is truly about."
"Hey! I always understood!" Wyspie flicked Winnie's ear with her paw. "I was only saying what I could look like..." she mumbled. "Boy, I cannot wait for Halloween!"
And thus the dogs in that kennel continued their convo, sharing ideas and thoughts on what they can do for Halloween this year.
The End
Egypt's Halloween - a story of fright,courage,hate and love
I will edit this as the contest goes on.
draft#4
2107 words
Hope you like it :)
Hello,I am Egypt.I am a strangely colored Border Collie that my owner (I call her Owner) took a liking to.She is training me in agility,and I love every bit of it. This is my halloween story.
There was a smell in the air.I knew it.It smelled like candy-and did I just smell dog treats??It smelled so good,it made me shiver with excitement. I got all hyper.My tail wagged a mile a minute.I was a puppy,and this was my first Halloween! I didn't know what halloween really was,but I had a feeling it was good.Owner had let me go without a costume, out of sheer kindness,although I didn't know what costumes were then.I ran in little circles.I whined.I yipped. Sometimes Owner just doesn't take a hint.When I was about to burst open the door, Owner clipped a leash to my collar. “come on , Egypt girl!” she called.Finally!
I followed her out,trying to Heel even with my excitement. We walked calmly for a couple blocks,me sniffing out pieces of fallen candy,Owner laughing.Me raising my hackles and scaring the other pups,and Owner trying to laugh and scold me at the same time.Me crunching leaves under my velvet paws,me shivering slightly in the cold air.I loved it.But then there were the costumes,although I didn't know what they were.I suppose it was strange I got a few blocks without seeing anyone in costume.We walked another block.It was then that the trouble started.
A GHOST!!! I yipped and in my fright, the collar slipped off my neck and I took off. I was so frightened ,I didn’t even hear my owner calling my name. I ran for it,in a blind panic.All I knew was I wanted to go away,far,far,away.How could I know it wasn't real?The excitement in the air turned to fear.I ran,for blocks and blocks and blocks.I didn't eat fallen candy.I didn't chase the squirrels.I didn't crunch the leaves or raise my hackles at the other pups.(though I couldn't have because this area was strangely without dogs)I just ran,only wanting to get away from the ghost.
I ran until I was panting hard.Only then did I stop to walk.I ate a whole bunch of leaves.It sounds funny,but I just get hungry at inconvenient times,okay? I walked on for another block or so.I saw eerie shadows cast in the light of the jack-o-lanterns. I tensed,and realized I was growing cold. The air started turning misty. The mist swirled and spiraled everywhere it went.Go home.,it said.Go away.I didn't have time to register it,because then,two monsters rounded the street corner.
Lets just say I was more than scared.
If there had been any dogs around to hear me,I would have sounded something like this: “EEEEEEEEKKKK!!!!!! MONSTERS!!!!!!!” I yipped in sheer fright and took off to the east.
I ran for what seemed like forever.Even though it was freezing cold I was panting very hard.It hurt my lungs to keep breathing in the now freezing air.After a while with each time I panted,there came a little whine.Then it grew louder until I was practically howling with pain. Then, my legs gave way and I toppled to the ground with a pitiful puppy howl.I know now that I had run for at least five miles.I shivered.I was cold and tired and in pain.Now my leg was hurting too,from my fall.I lay there panting and hurting and shivering.I didn't know where I was anymore.I suddenly realized that I was lost.I wished I had listened to what I thought the mist was telling me.A new panic joined the fear already inside me.Would I ever see Owner again? How could I have been so foolish? Then a huge icy wind came and blew a bunch of leaves in my direction. I jumped,startled and laid down again.I couldn't help but cry.I was still crying when...
ROBOTS!!! Metal,humanoid, clanking horrors! I didn’t know they were trying to help me.I limped away as fast as I could,using whatever courage had not been drained out of me already.I was already lost,it wouldn't matter if I got even more so.I held out for a few blocks until I found a soft pile of leaves and slept a bit,crying in my sleep.I dreamed owner was calling,calling,calling my name.I tried to howl or bark to tell her I was here.But no sound came out.I tried to run in the direction her voice was coming from,but my body wouldn't listen.Her calls kept coming.Louder.Louder.Louder.More agitated.More...inhuman.Soon they were deafening screeches.I tried to cover my ears with my paws,but I couldn't move them.
When I woke up,I felt a bit better,although the dream had spooked me.Then,I thought of Owner and our soft, warm Home.How I wished we were cuddled together by the fireplace,Owner petting me and reading a book,me blissfully asleep.And in the daytime, running and doing the fun things owner called "agility",her always shouting encouragement. I admit,I cried a bit more.I tried to go back to sleep,but I couldn't.I licked my paws until they were raw.I tried to eat leaves,but spat them out,not hungry anymore.I wished something would happen. What a bad wish.What a bad,bad wish to make on a freezing,haunted night on the 31st of October with a full moon overhead,watching your every move.
Oh, no, the scariest of all - PRINCESSES!!!!! All dressed in pink and purple with eerie tiaras and slippers and scepters I was sure were meant to hurt someone.Well,you humans wouldn't understand. But it was pure fright.I was too tired,scared,and hurt to run.All I could do was cover my nose with my paws and hope they couldn’t see me.I even closed my eyes,although I couldn't see in the darkness anyways. They didn’t see me.I sighed in relief.
Then,something very strange happened.I had dozed off, then woke with a start. I didn't know what woke me.I looked around.Bare,leafless trees. Cold, misty air. The glowing pale moon, staring down at me like a huge eye,watching me.Then I noticed it was strangely silent.No laughing or screaming,no howling or barking.Not even the hollow moan of the wind blowing through the bare trees.I looked up, and there was a dog.It had kind,gentle, but hollow eyes.I could see through it.I didn't know that it was a ghost...
It wagged it's tail once,and motioned to a sidewalk running west.It looked me up and down,examining me.Then,in the silent language all dogs posess, it said, Go away,little one,before danger befalls you.The moon is your guide.
I looked at the moon's white rays,then down again.The dog was gone,swirling trails of mist in its place.I must have imagined it..or did I?
After a while,I got the strength and courage to try to find Owner.Determined, I got up
with a sad whine of pain and loneliness and trotted down the street. It was late, and the pale full moon showed me my way through the darkness,like the ghost had said it would.If the ghost was real.Everything cast eerie shadows, including me.At first I jumped away from it,sure it was a wolf. I was half scared and half proud I could cast a big scary wolf shadow like that.
After a while, I saw a group of kids. Feeling ferocious with my wolf shadow at my side, I growled low and deep at them.They weren't like Owner at all.Owner was a teenager,but she was quiet and kind. They laughed meanly and picked me up.They didn’t pick me up softly and gently like Owner did.They were rough and careless. The next thing I knew,I was flying through the air,only to be caught by another reckless kid.I moaned.
They laughed again. The kid that was holding me threw me up into the air,but this time no one caught me.I was suspended in air for what seemed like eternity.I could hear Owner's voice,the barks of my kennelmates.I could hear my own paws drumming the ground,jumping,weaving.I hit the pavement,and everything went black.
When I woke up,the teenagers were gone, it was almost daylight,and my leg felt broken.I howled and whined,hoping that Owner would hear,wherever she was, and come and get me.My leg felt like someone had frozen it solid,then lit it on fire and cracked my bone.I missed Owner with all my heart.
Then a blond teenager walked down the street toward me,hearing my howls and whines.I felt so foolish and puppyish for howling and waking him up. Would he treat me like the kids did?
He walked over to me and kneeled down.I tensed,ready for the worst,but the worst never came. He stroked me talking soft nonsense words. I thumped my tail and licked him to let him know I liked him. He took out a hankerchief. “This is going to hurt,boy.” he said. (That is a mistake so many people make for dogs.I’m a GIRL!) Then he carefully picked me up, holding the broken leg with a bandage. I yelped in pain.He stroked me and soothed me.He distracted me with tidbits of meat.He was a Good Boy,like I am a Good Girl.
He walked me to the vet,talking to me all the way.By now the sun was coming up.It must have been 7:00. The vet took me in, and gave me a shot.I fell asleep,dreaming of running,jumping,weaving.
When I woke up,there was a cast on my leg.How would I run? How would I jump? How long would it take to heal? Would it EVER heal?The teen that had picked me up told her about how I was on the pavement howling and crying.
“I think she’s from a place miles away from here.They do agility there.” said the vet. “This little cutie traveled a long way.” I thumped my tail.The vet dialed a number on her phone. My ears perked up. Was that Owner on the other end?The vet talked a bit,then she hung up.
“Yep” said the vet,as if answering my question. “That’s her owner.She said she got away last night because she was afraid of all the halloween costumes people had.”
I put my head between my paws.So they were all costumes? The ghost? The monsters? The princesses? (I shuddered at the thought of those) But the cruel group of kids had been real.And the ghost dog,maybe.And my leg.I licked my cast. The vet half sighed,half laughed and put a Cone of Shame around my neck. ( if you’ve ever worn one of those, you know they’re nasty things to keep you from licking injured parts of yourself.They are very shameful)
About a half hour later,Owner came.Tears welled up in her pretty blue eyes and she came over to my cage.She petted me in her special Owner way. I caught myself before I purred.No way was I going to sound like some old cat! Instead I yipped for joy, and owner cried some. Then she talked a little with Tom (that was the name of the person who had taken me here) and they both left.
I stayed at the vet for about a week,letting my leg heal up some.I was anxious to do more agility.I slept a lot,and ran,jumped,weaved in my dreams.Sometimes I would wake up because I had twitched my legs in my dreams and hurt my broken leg. After the week was over, Owner came for me,and she carefully put me in my kennel in the backseat. Tom was in there, too!
So Tom drove us home.And after a while, my leg would heal up and I could get back to my training.Little did any of us know, years later,Tom and Owner would get married,and they would have two kids. Yay!There were things ahead for me,too. Like competing at an agility trial,or having pups at my side. I couldn’t wait!
But I will always remember that scary halloween night,with its costumes and jack-o-lanterns (even though I didn’t notice them at first,they were pretty scary),and candy and treats and hate.And,most important of all, love.
So this is my story.It is for you to decide if the ghost was real,or if even my story is real. Regardless, take a lesson from this tale.
And beware.
The Were-Wolves are Watching!
Starring: Swirlfur
Nothing in the woods near by scared Swirlfur, a young Jack Russell. She always went for a walk everyday to look at the trees. Bare, yet beautiful. Halloween night was no exception. She was warned to stay away, but what could go wrong? Nothing, in her mind. Swirlfur, though, heard a fearful screech. Satisfied it was an owl, she continued. But it happened again. Many times. A thick fog covered her paws. She glanced to the left, spotting a black flash and yellow eyes, glowing like embers in the dark night. Swirlfur’s heart started pound like a drum, she panted with stress. The dog stopped in her tracks. She remembered why she shouldn’t be in the Woods Of Alacrity. It was known for were-wolves. They were at their peak during Halloween. And everyone knew what happened if you in the right spot. The black shadow dashed out and leapt over her. White fangs glimmered and the yellow eyes watched her every move. Soon more appeared, flashing back and forth, snarling and growling. She was trapped. Will She make it? Maybe…Maybe not.
The Tale Of The Terror Hound
Howls in the night didn’t normally frighten young Katniss. It was always wolves, baying at the glowing full moon. But this howl was different, more of a screech, an extremely high pitched deafening screech to be exact. The kind of screech that would make any young pup run in terror. But Katniss wasn’t any young pup, she was her fathers pup. Kay, her father, was an extremely brave, extremely curios dog with a huge sense of adventure. Like daughter like father i assume.
The young pup rose to her feet, and slowly stepped towards the entrance of the dog house. As any pup would, she stuck her head out to look around. Nothing was there. Katniss sighed in relief, thinking she was safe. She couldn’t have thought more wrong.
The howling started again, this time from behind the dog house. Katniss yelped and ran towards the house in which her owners were in cased in, only to notice the door was shut. She was trapped. No where to run, no where to hide in this empty garden.
She felt her self shaking in fear, as a silhouette of a large black dog appeared from behind the dog house. The only thing you could see part from its outline was its eyes. Those eerie green eyes that seemed to be glowing. Katniss just stood there motionless. She wanted to run, but her legs seemed to be locked into place, as the large dog stared at her. Katniss, turned to look through the glass door where she could see her owners carving pumpkins, and then turning the lights off. The lights shining through the glass was the only means of seeing around the garden for Katniss. Now she could see nothing but darkness. Owls tooted in the distance from the woods, dog barked from other gardens but Katniss wasn’t concentrating on either of them, just the warm breeze blowing through the back of her neck, that could be no other then a dog breathing.
Katniss couldn’t move a single muscle, she couldn’t breath or look up. Nothing to do but stand there, shivering as the large brute seemed to examine her. The dog, prodded her with his paw and licked her neck. This was strange to Katniss as to her family, it meant a sign of friendship. But of coarse, this dog wasn’t part of her family at all. I looked up ever so slightly, to catch a glimpse of my inspector. A large black husky, with those green eyes and a muscular frame. You could see he had been in fights from the scars that covered his body. The scars she had seen before. Katniss recognised this dog from somewhere but just couldn’t put her paw on it.
That was when a strange glowing light came from inside the house. Both dogs looked into the room, so see to orange faces staring at them. Both lit with a flame in there mouths. Neither of them knew what it was, as it seemed to goolishly float around the air. The black brute, whimpered in terror as the faces for closer and closer. All of a sudden it stopped, leaving them in complete blackness.
When the normal lights flickered on inside, I turned to face the black brute. He had vanished! No where to be seen, no sign of paw prints, fur or sounds. As if this brute vanished into thin air.
Katniss turned to face behind her, hearing the doors slide open as one of her master’s picked her up and took her inside. Katniss immediately ran to her father that lay beside the fire.
"Have a nice time outside?" Kay asked, staring at his now terrified little puppy.
"Dad, what was that tale you told me last Halloween?"
"What the terror hound? The dog that comes around dogs gardens at night to scare little pups before vanishing into thin air? The one with lots of scars? Katniss don’t be scared its just an old folk story."
But Katniss knew this to be true. She was lucky that she saw the dreaded terror hound.
