Alternative pet??
Started By
Heya ala! Well, have some sad news. My parents won't let me buy a pet dog. (I was going to use my money to buy it and care for it.) I only have two cats,a dog (She's really my moms dog,but I am sometimes found caring for her),and a few fish to keep me company. I am financally able to buy another pet,but I'm trying to find a pet my parents will like too. I need a sort of alternative pet. I've tryed to convice them of a rat,or mouse. They don't really like them, and I wouldn't want to be annoying. We have a baby in the house,so it really needs to be good with kids and freindly. Here are some of the pets I've wanted:
Sugar Glider (Like Lovebirds not a "Yes,by all means")
Dog
Cat
Rat
Mouse
Lovebirds (Never really got a no,but not a "Yes by all means")
All the pets above I've reaserched and though about, and asked my parents for,but they didn't really like the idea.
The reason why may parents won't allow me to purchase another dog is,one it would have to be an outside dog (Not all that good for dogs),two we'd have to keep it chained up,and three we have a neighboor who puts dogs in a cadge in her stuffy garage and sends them to the pound. (She once tied up a Beagle to a tree with no shade, food,or water in the middle of a rain storm I was tempted to un-tie it and take it to my house.) I want an animal that'd be a great companion, loving, and intellegent (Sort of like self awareness.) So,if you have any ideas post! (Note in my state we can not have the following: Skunks,Foxes,Badgers,Lions,Tigers,or Bears. Nor can we have any song birds) I really don't want any more fish,my tank won't allow it! X3

The only thing that comes to mind that's not on your list is ferrets. Although the problem arises when you can't let it out of the cage. Both rats and ferrets need plenty of out of cage time to live happy fulfilling lives.

There's really no other pet I would suggest aside from rats. ]:

Do not get Sugar Gliders. They have highly specific dietary needs. I had a few of them then had another dumped on me by an owner who claimed she couldn't afford it anymore.

When he got to me, he had been living by himself and as a result was chewing his tail off and hypoglycemic due to what the previous owner had been feeding him. I took him to the vet, got him on an emergency diet and it still wasn't helping. I had to watch his cage constantly, give him vitamins and electrolytes on several occasions when I really thought he was going to die, and cart him off to the vet more times I can count and my wallet cares to go into.

He got progressively worse until the day I opened his cage and he didn't acknowledge me. He just sat there, really dehydrated and lethargic. I went to go get an eye dropper and some water, and when I came back he had dragged himself into my blanket and wasn't very responsive. That moment when you realize your pet is going to die is awful once the other two go, I'm probably not going to get more pets for a long while.

If you don't clean their cage out at least once a week, they get sick. Too little protein in their diet, they get sick. Not the right balance of potassium and calcium, they get sick. Two males that don't like each other? They'll fight constantly and the more dominant one will literally starve his cagemate.

They are really just not good pets, especially if you're in college or high school, they need a crazy amount of attention and play time out of their cage and can live for fifteen years or more with proper care. What do you plan on doing with them when you go away to college? What if you have to move?

Just something you might want to consider.

Clayton- I would keep the new pet in my room, that was meant to be a response to "your other animals will likely attack it." :]
"I thought those were the animals you wanted" Yes,but my parents don't really want any of those animals due to some care requirements/fears. :3

Most of my pets arn't allowed freely in my room anyways.
There goes sugar glider, rat, mouse and bird. Small animals need to be around you for most of the day or they just won't get used to you and will fear you.

What I was really asking for is pets that arn't on that list
I thought those were the animals you wanted? :S I would just stick to the ones you already have.

Clay- Thank you,but I knew all of those things from my prior reaserch. :] Most of my pets arn't allowed freely in my room anyways. (Acceptions- My indoor cat will sometimes be allowed to sleep in my room, and my fish, whom I wouldn't expect to attack anyone. X3) What I was really asking for is pets that arn't on that list. :3 But thank you for your reply.

Sugar Glider
These are an exotic pet, they need very specific care and socialization. You cannot buy one, stick it in a cage and hope for the best.

Dog, Cat
Don't you have these already?

Rat
Rats are fun but seem to get tumors a lot. Also need certain cages/bedding so they don't get respiratory infections.
Mouse
Same as rats but less friendly
Both should not be left around kids, risk of the kid hurting it or the animal biting the kid in fear. Rats are no joke when it comes to biting, they can bite right down to bone

Lovebirds
Do you like noise/screeching/screaming all day at random? How about seeds all over the floor [not even cage guards will keep out all seeds]. Pet birds are extremely messy, very loud and have very different diseases/illnesses. They are expert at hiding injury and illness and very, verrry minute things like even a spray of Fabreeze in a room will make a bird sick. I would not leave a bird with a kid ever

I suggest just loving the pets you have. If you want to bring any animal in the house, you need to realize that your other animals will likely try to attack it.

one it would have to be an outside dog (Not all that good for dogs),two we'd have to keep it chained up,and three we have a neighboor who puts dogs in a cadge in her stuffy garage and sends them to the pound.
Please don't get another dog ]:
